Flexible Nursing in Complex Homecare: Take Control of Your Working Schedule

Written by Deedee Fortune, Case Manager, Ambition24direct

As a Case Manager at Ambition24direct, I talk with nurses about what they want from their working lives. Many tell me the same thing: they love nursing, but having little say over their own time has worn them down. Rotas set for them, weekends given up for years, and little room for family or study.

It is not the length of the shift that wears people down so much as having no say in it. Complex homecare nursing is not right for everyone, but if you are looking for flexible nursing jobs in the UK, it offers something many nurses have been missing: real, practical control over when you work. Here is how it works at Ambition24direct, and what we ask of you in return.

How Flexible Agency Nursing Works in Complex Homecare

At Ambition24direct, we start with your availability. When you register, I ask you to set it out concretely:

  • The days you can work

  • The hours you prefer

  • The area you are willing to cover

We then match you to suitable complex care packages. You choose which to accept, and nothing is imposed on you.

Complex care packages typically involve longer shifts of 10 to 12 hours, supporting the same patient on a regular basis. Once you accept a package, you work a defined set of shifts within a rota you agreed in advance. That is a different kind of predictability from a hospital rota: you chose it, and it fits around your life.

Homecare Nursing Around Family and Caring Responsibilities

Many of the nurses I work with are parents, supporting elderly relatives, or managing their own health conditions alongside their careers. Hospital shift work is notoriously difficult to fit around these realities. Homecare agency work can be structured around school hours, a partner’s working pattern, or the particular demands of a given week.

This is not a small quality-of-life adjustment. For some nurses, having a say over their own schedule is what keeps them in clinical practice. NHS England figures show the number of registered nurses leaving the NHS and citing work-life balance rose by 38% between 2020/21 and 2022/23, and homecare offers a meaningful alternative.

Studying Alongside Your Nursing Career

Room to grow, without giving up the work you love, and a schedule that lets you do both.

Complex care nursing is an area of significant clinical development, and many nurses working in it are pursuing additional qualifications in specialist practice, clinical leadership, or areas such as advanced clinical assessment. The flexibility of agency work lets you study alongside clinical practice in a way that hospital shift patterns often prevent. Some of our nurses have completed postgraduate qualifications while working full caseloads in complex homecare. They will tell you it was not easy, but it was possible.

Flexibility and Commitment: What to Expect

We are upfront about the trade-offs, because nurses and the families who rely on them deserve clarity. Flexibility applies to how you choose your availability. Reliability applies once you have committed.

When you commit to a complex care package, we expect consistency. The patient and their family depend on you, and in a complex care setting an unplanned absence is not just inconvenient, it can be unsafe. Cancelling at short notice has a real human impact.

Pay is also worth understanding clearly. Agency nursing in complex care is typically paid at competitive hourly rates, but without the employment benefits of a salaried post. Holiday pay, sick pay and pension contributions work differently under agency arrangements. That is not a reason to avoid agency work, but it should be part of your financial planning. We will explain exactly how it works before you commit.

What Nurses Say About Moving to Homecare

The nurses who make the move to complex homecare agency work and stay with it tend to say the same things. They feel like professionals again. They have time for their families. They feel valued by the patients they support. One nurse told me recently: “For the first time in fifteen years of nursing, I actually look forward to going to work.”

Is Flexible Complex Care Nursing Right for You?

If you thrive on the social environment of a busy ward and the variety of managing different patients every day, complex homecare agency work may not be the right fit. But if you are a confident clinician who values autonomy and meaningful patient relationships, and you want real control over your working life, we would like to hear from you.

To see what flexible nursing could look like for you, speak to our team. Call 0330 678 3014 or register your interest, and we will talk through your availability, experience and goals. We will also tell you honestly whether we have a package that fits.

Every nurse’s situation is different, and we take that seriously.
