Complex Epilepsy at Home

For individuals with drug-resistant or high-frequency epilepsy, or where seizures present with serious clinical risk — including prolonged seizures, status epilepticus, or post-ictal complications — care at home requires trained nursing staff, not just support workers.

Epilepsy frequently co-exists with other complex conditions — cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, spinal muscular atrophy, and other neurological conditions. Ambition24direct manages epilepsy as part of a holistic complex care package, not as an isolated clinical task.

Seizure management is not a task for generic carers. Emergency rescue medication (buccal midazolam, rectal diazepam, intranasal midazolam) must be administered by a trained, competent nurse or healthcare assistant with a signed-off medication protocol. We do not compromise on this.

  • Yes. All staff assigned to packages where emergency rescue medication is required are trained and signed off as competent to administer the individual's specific medication — buccal midazolam, rectal diazepam, or intranasal midazolam — before commencing care. Competency sign-off is completed for each individual patient's protocol, not just as a generic training exercise.

  • Yes. For individuals at risk of nocturnal seizures — including SUDEP risk — we provide waking night nursing, with trained staff monitoring through the night. Seizure monitoring equipment can be incorporated into the care plan in coordination with the epilepsy team.

  • Yes. Our paediatric clinical staff support children with complex epilepsy in educational settings, working alongside school nursing teams and SENCOs to ensure seizure management plans are understood and emergency rescue medication protocols are in place. We attend EHCP reviews and liaise with school staff where required.

  • Yes. Where a ketogenic diet has been prescribed by the epilepsy team as part of seizure management, our clinical staff can support its implementation and monitoring at home — working alongside the prescribing dietitian and epilepsy team.
