Spinal Cord Injury at Home
Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in varying levels of motor and sensory loss depending on the level and completeness of the injury. High cervical injuries (C1–C4) typically require permanent ventilator support and round-the-clock nursing. Lower-level injuries may require complex physical care, catheter management, bowel programmes, and pressure area monitoring without ventilator dependency.
Ambition24direct delivers SCI homecare across the full spectrum — from newly discharged spinal unit patients to individuals who have lived with their injury for years and need consistent, clinically excellent community support.
Case managers and solicitors: Spinal cord injury is one of the most frequently compensated catastrophic injuries. We work with case managers, solicitors, and financial deputies managing MedCo-assessed and CICA packages — providing the clinical governance documentation and audit trail required for case management and court proceedings. Call 0330 678 3014 to discuss.
Injury levels we support:
C1–C4: Ventilator-dependent, tracheostomy
C5–C8: Partial hand/arm function, high dependency
Thoracic (T1–T12): Paraplegia, independent upper body
Lumbar/Sacral: Variable lower limb and bladder/bowel
Incomplete injuries at any level

Our Approach
SCI care requires absolute consistency. An unfamiliar carer handling autonomic dysreflexia or a ventilator circuit for the first time is a clinical risk. We eliminate that risk.
Dedicated, Stable Teams
We build and maintain a small, named care team around each individual. The same nurses managing the same routines — with deep, patient-specific knowledge that only comes from consistency.
Injury-Specific Competency
All staff are trained and signed off as competent to the individual's specific clinical profile before care commences. C3 injury with tracheostomy requires different competencies to a T6 paraplegia. We treat them differently.
Named Clinical Oversight
A named clinical lead manages every package — attending MDT meetings, reviewing care plans, and remaining the direct point of contact for families, spinal consultants, and commissioners.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. We provide round-the-clock nursing for C1–C4 ventilator-dependent patients — including tracheostomy management, ventilator circuit care, emergency tube change, and autonomic dysreflexia monitoring. All staff assigned to ventilator-dependent patients are trained to the patient's specific equipment and protocol before care starts.
-
Yes. Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication for individuals with injuries above T6. Our nurses are trained to recognise the signs, identify and remove the trigger, and manage an acute episode — and to escalate to emergency services when required. Every high-level SCI package includes an AD protocol as standard.
-
Yes. We work with spinal injury centres and rehabilitation hospitals to plan and execute community step-down. We participate in discharge planning meetings, conduct pre-discharge home assessments, and ensure staff are trained and competent before the patient leaves hospital.
-
Yes. SCI is one of the most common catastrophic injuries we support through compensation funding. We work with case managers, solicitors, and financial deputies — providing clinical governance documentation, staff training records, and compliance evidence in the format required for case management and court proceedings.
-
Yes. We provide paediatric SCI care through our children's complex care service — supporting children in home, school, and community settings. Packages are funded through Children's Continuing Care, compensation routes, or private arrangements.
