Huntington's Disease at Home
Huntington's disease is a hereditary, progressive neurological condition that affects movement, cognition, and behaviour simultaneously. This triple clinical complexity — physical, cognitive, and psychiatric — makes HD one of the most demanding conditions to manage in a home setting.
Standard domiciliary care agencies are not equipped to manage involuntary movements, dysphagia, choking risk, behavioural changes, and complex medication regimes together. Ambition24direct's registered nurses are. We have the clinical training, behavioural management capability, and patience to deliver genuinely specialist HD care.
HD care demands clinical and behavioural expertise together. Choking risk from choreic movements during eating, behavioural dysregulation, and the emotional weight of caring for a family member with HD cannot be managed by a generic carer. Our nurses are specifically trained for this.
HD stages we support:
Early HD — increasing support needs
Middle stage — significant physical and cognitive dependency
Advanced HD — high dependency, dysphagia, falls
End-stage HD — palliative and end-of-life care
Juvenile HD (rare, paediatric cases)

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. Behavioural change in HD — including aggression, impulsivity, obsessive behaviours, apathy, and psychosis — requires a calm, consistent, clinically trained team who understand the neurological basis of what they are observing. Our staff are trained in positive behaviour support approaches and work closely with HD specialist nurses and neuropsychiatrists where the individual's team includes one.
-
Choking is a serious risk in HD due to involuntary choreic movements affecting swallowing. Our staff are trained in dysphagia awareness, safe feeding techniques for people with HD, and emergency first aid for choking. Where swallowing is unsafe, we manage PEG feeding in coordination with the speech and language therapist and dietitian. We take this risk extremely seriously.
-
Middle to advanced HD frequently meets the threshold for NHS Continuing Healthcare — given the combination of complex clinical, cognitive, and behavioural needs that cannot be safely met by social care alone. We can provide clinical documentation and support ICBs through the CHC assessment process.
-
Yes. We provide end-of-life care for people with advanced HD — including syringe driver management, palliative symptom control in coordination with specialist palliative care teams, and family support through an incredibly difficult period. Many HD families have a strong wish for their loved one to die at home, and we work hard to make that possible.
