Which Mental health conditions are largely recognised at this stage?

With Mental Health recently receiving a lot of attention, and loads of education still needed in this field, we will be looking at the most common categories of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and jobs available in this field.

Mental illnesses are a diverse group of conditions that affect a person's mood, thinking, behaviour, and overall functioning. Treatment ranges from medication to hospitalisation, and each requires a treatment plan once diagnosis is reached.

Here are some common types of mental illness:

  1. Anxiety disorders: These can include generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and phobias.

  2. Mood disorders: These can include major depression, bipolar disorder, and dysthymic disorder.

  3. Personality disorders: These can include borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

  4. Psychotic disorders: These can include schizophrenia, delusional disorder, and schizoaffective disorder.

  5. Eating disorders: These can include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.

  6. Substance abuse disorders: These can include alcohol and drug addiction.

  7. Trauma and stressor-related disorders: These can include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), acute stress disorder, and adjustment disorder.

It's important to note that mental illness can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status, and each condition can range in severity from mild to debilitating. Consulting a doctor for a diagnosis would be the first port of call, thereafter, a treatment plan can be built by a registered nurse, doctor or carer.

What would a Ambition24Direct Agency Nurse or Carer be responsible for?

Nursing and Caregiving is an occupation which has been around since the beginning of formal medicine, and the fundamentals have not changed in all that time.

A caregiver would be responsible for keeping their patient well rested, ensure they are eating regular meals, are bathed, and in good spirits. They may be required to clean and dress wounds, assist with trips to the shop, as well as other responsibilities which clients may request.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it. But the complexity only begins there. With these basic tasks being so much more challenging when a patient is unwell, mentally impaired or suffering from a chronic illness. And this is where the experienced caregivers make their mark. Nurses who can look after their patients while remaining firm, and following procedures, is a quality which we know is not that easy to find.

Compassion and empathy, with a firm grasp on requirements is vital, with timekeeping and reporting serious occurrences being top priority too.

Other household duties may come into play: a caregiver may be required to tidy the kitchen after preparing meals, maintain good hygiene standards in the home, and may even be required to accompany their patient on shop trips or hospital visits.

Are you an experienced nurse dealing with mental health treatment? We are continually in need of qualified carers and nurses to join our homecare sector, so please do visit Staffshift, and register to work with us – we have hundreds of shifts available near you.
